NASA has joined forces with Sony to research how Virtual Reality might be used to train operators in controlling robots for space deployment. NASA is currently exploring ways of using humanoid robots. This form of technology is appealing due to their flexibility and ability to mirror human form and dexterity.
Whilst they have executed the use and control of probes and rovers, the movement of robots needs to be quick and intuitive. Commands need to be delivered with fluidity and improv. They now believe that VR may be the best way to exert control using human input. The vision is robots would be able to mimic the input of a remote operator.
With the assistance of Sony, a VR demo has been created for Play Station that will explore how it might work. The demonstration runs in real-time using a PS4. It has been designed to replicate the challenges the robots would face whilst in space.
